Marioneta bola obľúbenou bábkou kočovných hercov už v staroveku. S marionetami herci hrávali v marionetových divadlách. Hovorí sa, že názov tejto bábky je odvodený od mena Panny Márie. Marioneta je technicky najnáročnejšia bábka. Vedená je zhora. Žiadny iný typ bábky nie je tak závislý na materiáli a technicko-fyzikálnych podmienkach ako práve marioneta. Samotná konštrukcia bábky na nitiach je zložitá mechanická záležitosť. Na jej fungovanie je veľmi dôležité správne naviazanie nití na kĺby bábky a na váhadlo. Táto bábka dokáže urobiť len to, na čo je technicky uspôsobená, je odkázaná na skúseného technológa. Marionety sú veľmi zložité pri práci s rekvizitou.
